Can someone explain the quick fall of the Berlin wall?

by berlinwall123

Now, as we all know, the Berlin wall didn't fall quickly at all. It's just that the time between "The wall will stay" and "well, everyone is allowed to pass through" was very short. Could someone please explain how the situation escalated so quickly? And, if it's not too much of a problem for you, if there are any people lokking at this post right now who have experienced either the rise, the fall, living in a seperated Berlin or all three of those, would you please tell us about it? We'd like to use the comments to this post for our school project. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance, berlinwall123.

I'd be happy to answer any specific question you may have about living with the wall and experiencing its downfall, but I am not going to write your school project for you. There are are plenty of good sources available how it happened.

It's actually an almost funny story. As far as I understand it, the government of East Germany had decided to loosen restrictions on travel between East and West Berlin. That evening, a conference was scheduled in which a less-than-well informed government official announced the new policy. One of the reporters asked the official when the policy would come into effect. Lacking a proper answer, he simply said "immediately". Within a few hours thousands of people were pouring past dazed security guards who had watched the same broadcast and were unsure of what to do. Eventually orders were given to yield, and people were able to cross freely. In the following days and weeks the wall was demolished by a combination of individuals with sledgehammers the governments with bulldozers.
