I was given a prompt for my APUSH summer assignment regarding choosing one of the three colonial regions (New England Colonies, Middle Colonies, and Southern Colonies) to keep under the crowns rule and the other two to be given self rule. I have a hard time getting essays started and was wondering if anyone would have any insight to this prompt of either regions that are easy to defend as keeping or as giving self rule. I AM NOT asking someone to write my essay for me by any means.
This is a pretty easy prompt. I feel like the bulk of the reasoning behind this essay is the research, rather than the writing itself. That said, you do need a place to get started. My recommendation is to use economy, primarily exports, as a jumping point. You should be able to eliminate one based on this, and from there, you can use location (relative to enemies/allies, trade routes, etc), resources (if you can't have the same exports as the other one, can you start producing those exports there?), and possibly population as deciding factors.
All of this information is pretty easily available online but be sure to check your sources!

Your school or library may have access to more (Americas Historical Newspaper Archive for example), but the VA Gazettes are available online for free. You can see what sorts of imports are occurring. I've been studying them in detail lately and have found I can pinpoint where the British occupations are by the number and type of advertisements shops put into the papers. There are also opinionated articles about the war, such as discussing the huge inflation that is occurring or buying local early on.
Look into the Continental Congress as well, since those representatives would give you a good overview of what each colony thought. Some were far more eager for independence than others.
