Has academia in the west and elsewhere always been associated with the Left? Was there ever a time or place where universities were publishing and furthering observably conservative works?

That title was poorly phrased, of course universities publish conservative works, but I mean in the sense that universities were seen as a conservative "bubble" by the public in much the same way they are seen as a liberal bubble now. I'm sure you know what I mean.
