What parts of England were the Colonial settlers of America more likely to come from, depending on region?

Prior to the American war of independence. I can see, for example, that many of the early settlements were founded by Puritans escaping religious persecution and the instability of the English civil war, but which regions of England were they more likely to come from? What about in Canada?

I recently completed a history course about the Tudor period and civil wars, so I might be able to help. I believe most purtians would come from the south east. Norfolk , east Anglia and Kent regions. Because these areas had the most interaction, through trade, with the Dutch and Germany states who by this point were host to many new protestant ideas, Martin Luther being German kicking it off, etc. These areas were highly built on trade (the English wool trade being a whole other story) and the more populous regions of England at the time, for example in the 16th century Norwich was the second largest English town with a population of 30,000. Norwich was also the location of the only pro-protestant revolt which happened in the Tudor period (1549 to be exact) , that being ketts. Which is evidence that the religion spread and was most prevalent there. Therefore it makes sense these would be the most likely places for them to come from , however I believe there were many sects across England in this time. Cromwell also came from this area, starting out as a local mp.

Sorry if I this isn't up to standards, I'm on my phone.

The historian David Hackett Fischer wrote an entire book on this subject, entitled Albion's Seed. In this work, Fischer examines the origins of American regional cultures in the different waves of immigration from different parts of the British Isles.

To summarize his findings:

  • New England was initially settled by Puritans (Calvinists) mainly from East Anglia.
  • Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley was initially settled by Quakers (Society of Friends), who were mostly from the North Midlands, and parts of Wales.
  • Virginia and the Carolinas were intially settled by "distressed gentry" and their indentured servants, who were mostly from the South and Southwest of Engalnd, especially Oxfordshire, Hampfordshire, and Berkshire -- Wessex, basically.
  • The "Backcountry" (Appalalchia and beyond) was initially settled by Scots-Irish from the English Borderlands and Northern Ireland.
