I never thought of the UN when I thought of the Korean War until today. It seems like there were UN forces in Korea, and after doing some reading, it looks like China wanted the UN out of the Korean peninsula. Why couldn't they use their veto powers?
But my main question is: How did they remain part of the UN if they fought UN forces during the third Battle of Seoul?
Mainland China wasn't a member of the UN until 1971. So they would neither have been in any coalition not would they have had veto powers. The China in the UN was the Republic of China, located in Taiwan and alligned with the west
At the time the China in the UN was considered to be the western back exiled government in what is now called Taiwan. And the mainland China goverment wasn't recognised by the UN.
The more intetesting question is why did USSR with veto power not veto the war? Don't just read the next line actually think why in the world would a country not veto a UN war against its own ally...
Because at the time North Korea invaded the South Korea the USSR was botcotting the UN over the fact that the communist mainland Chinese government was not reoresenting China but instead the western backed government on Taiwan.
