Brazil benefited indirectly by initiating the Proalcool (pro-alcohol) program. The government feared it's dependency on foreign oil and invested heavily on researching and developing a production base for sugar cane-based ethanol fuel (simply called "alcohol" locally). Nowadays, most vehicles produced for the Brazilian market have "Flexfuel" engines, which can run any mixture of gas and ethanol (with pros and cons for each type of fuel), and gas stations offer both fuels (in addition to diesel and, in some stations, LPG).
