Ideally, I would like examples of couples who were open about both the fact that they were in a relationship, and their political differences.
For example, a Democratic Senator married to a Republican Governor.
They're not elected, but a very famous contemporary example is the married couple of James Carville and Mary Matalin. Carville is a very prominent figure in Democratic politics and Matalin is an equally prominent figure in Republican politics. Amusingly, they became romantically involved when they were both working as campaign staffers during the 1992 presidential election campaign … for different candidates. Carville was a senior adviser on Clinton's campaign, and Matalin was a deputy campaign manager on Bush's campaign. Bush lost the election and Clinton won, and Carville and Matalin were married the next year. They have two children, daughters, and by all accounts they've been happily married ever since while remaining very active in their respective political affairs.
