Most American churches during the mid 20th century tended to cater to a specific neighborhood or community. So a church in a predominantly black neighborhood would usually be all-black.

There are cases of integrated churches. Jim Jones' Peoples Temple, for example was famous for being one of the most integrated churches in the country.
