How popular were movements to have Napoleon canonized as a Saint in the 19th Century? Was the question considered by ecclesiastics at any level?

Napoleon enjoyed such a hagiographic legacy in a lot of countries, but especially in France after his death, and I know such movements existed. I find it very difficult to find accessible information in either French or English just because of the absolute lack of scholarship on the question. All information relates either to Napoleon's personal convictions which are eminently debatable, or on his political relationship with religions, before and after his death.

Any information on this sort of movement?

Have you read Sudhir Hazareesingh's The Saint-Napoleon: Celebrations of Sovereignty in Nineteenth-Century France? One of the things he points out is that the attempts to venerate Bonaparte during the Second Empire - including attempts to treat him as a saint - had to do with seeking legitimacy for the new regime in a time of political turmoil and fostering national sentiment among the French populace.
