I think I have a basic understanding of the Citizen Genet Affair but I'm having trouble finding information on Genet's later life. It says on his Wikipedia page that "It was Hamilton – Genêt's fiercest opponent in the cabinet – who convinced Washington to grant him safe haven in the United States." But why did Hamilton do this? Do we know anything about Hamilton's motivations?
Would be interested in this. My family has some old books on Citizen Genet. They tell stories of him being more of a borderline pirate.
