What are some good books to introduce history to my child?

by pumpkin123

My child is 3 and we have started reading the nat get little kids first book of space. We really enjoy it and I was wondering if there is something similar for history? I have always enjoyed reading about history and I would like to be able to share that with my child.

This may be too early, but here's a comic book worth exploring:

My tip is simplified stories from greek mythology. Not exactly Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, but something easier. Not really sure where are you from, but in my country, these stories (like those about Hercules, Odysseus or Ikaros) are simplified for school children and put into one book, which is later often used as mandatory reading in schools. They are more fairy tales than boring and long works so they can get you a good start at this age! I remember my parents read those to me when I was younger and I always wanted to hear that one about Trojan war.

When your child is older, may I suggest Terry Deary's books? They are quite nice as well for a kid! I am not really sure what this sub thinks of these, but hey, they are for children!

Also: let your kid play some games with some historical background, for example Age of Mythology, Age of Empires or Stronghold games! They are fun and they can get you hooked up on history really well.

EDIT: also, don't press things. Seriously. If you will constantly try to hook up your kid on history (or anything for that matter), he/she will hate it.

The Horrible Histories books were always popular when I worked in a public library, but they'd be more for 6-12 year olds. Dorling Kindersley publishes some wonderful image-heavy non-fiction titles that are great for kids. I'd suggest a general children's encyclopedia that your child can dip into.

How I got hooked on history early was folklore and mythology. I'm from Nottingham so we got stories about Robin Hood, and I was also fascinated by Arthurian stuff and Greek and Roman mythology. Definitely recommend Horrible Histories when they're a bit older. I also recommend Rosemary Sutcliffe's historical fiction. I was also brought up on Puddle Lane books which have a historical feel, and Enid Blyton.
