He was my great uncle or there about. I inherited some books about him as well as personal letters he wrote back in the day. I've read his wiki as well and it seems he was quite noteworthy but I'd like to have some frame of reference to put it into context.

Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery is considered Britain's best general in World War II. He was extremely famous in the UK and was well known in the United States. His New York Times obituary was filled with fulsome praise by US Army ETO vets, that worked closely with Montgomery, during the war.
