Is there any historical basis to "pirate speak", you know stuff like "arr there be buried treasure" etc. Thanks.
The standard "pirate voice" actually came from actor Robert Newton's portrayal of Long John Silver in the 1952 film "Treasure Island." Newton was from southern England, and put on an exaggerated accent from the region he grew up in, which became the standard.
