I don't suppose the Somalis stole the idea from somewhere else!
hi! assuming you're asking a serious question, if you don't find answers here, you might try x-posting to the flag experts in /r/Vexillology
The flag of Somalia was designed by one Mohammed Awale Liban in 1954. He chose the light blue background to represent the United Nations (Somalia was at the time a trust territory). The five-pointed star represented the unity of the five Somali regions divided by colonial borders (Italian, British, and French Somaliland, plus Northeastern Kenya, and Ogaden in Ethiopia). I've also heard it interpreted as representing five major Somali clans. The white colour symbolized peace and prosperity.
Liban reportedly designed the flag and produced a sample in a single night after learning that the legislature was going to debate the flag the following day. That might account for its simplicity. The similarity to the Bonnie Blue flag is purely a coincidence; a star is a very common charge in flag design and blue and white are very common colours.
