I need to teach a course on world ancient history next term. I have a great handle on Europe, East Asia, and the Middle East, but India is a gaping whole in my knowledge. Any good introductory sources?
I was in the exact same position as you. These are the books I used:
Cambridge History of India is a great option. If your institution gives you access to Cambridge Histories Online, they are your best friend.
I also used India: The Ancient Past by Burjor Avari is a nice narrative.
I am teaching an environmental history of the world, so I used A People's History of India 36: Man and Environment by Irfan Habib.
Early India: A Concise History By D.N. JHA is good for cultural aspects of early Indian history.
