The Jews weren't "given" Israel: the UN Partition Plan intended to partition the area for Jews and Arabs (in territory which did not mimic what Israel was eventually established as), but it was never implemented. The Jews had to fight for Palestine, which was until then a mandated territory belonging to Britain. One cannot "take land away from" Palestine if Palestine is not a sovereign nation: rather, Israel was founded in Palestine, rather than Germany. The movement for Palestine was historically rooted and a goal of the Jews for quite some time, and I provide an answer to this question precisely at this comment, and /u/gingerkid1234 provides an answer here which mentions much of what I say above as well.
