Lost cause myth of civil war

by newlindc83

What do historians today generally think of the lost cause myth? I've been reading about how the lost cause research has mostly occurred since 1980. I think Americans still don't understand the debate and reality of the causes of the civil war.

Could you clarify your question?

Are you asking does contemporary historiography found veracity in the tenets and claims of the lost cause (slavery was benign, the Southern generals gallant, etc.)? Or have historians examined the lost cause as its own topic (such as examine how the lost cause evolved across time and geography)?
