Why communism is associated with totalitarianism and is communism possible with democracy?

by Damncommie123

As I understand, totalitarianism is a form of government, and communism is a form of societal and economic system. Also, communism was never implemented in real world, not even close.

But I wonder if communism is able to work with democracy and their relationships, and if such combinations was tried in history and if yes what were the results.

I understand that this is not exactly askhistorians question, but I think that scholars who studied history of communism are most qualified to answer this. Thank you.

Hayek says that a centrally planned economy always results in some form of dictatorship, in any society there are contradictions due to resource allocation, but with a free market these contradictions are resolved peacefully by means of setting prices, important and desired things get a higher price than the rest;

On the other side: a government that has to decide upon every aspect of the economy by means of planning can only resort to the use of force as a means to solve these contradictions.

Hayek's book 'The Road to Serfdom' can be read here: http://www.iea.org.uk/sites/default/files/publications/files/upldbook351pdf.pdf

There are communists that believe in a free market, however central planning was usually a basic component of the communist system. However it is debatable to what extend modern China is still following the usual model; however even in China the party still wants to be in charge.
