When and how did American Christians start to believe that circumcision was a part of their religion? Was a similar phenomenon present in other Western countries when circumcision became popular as a prophylactic procedure?

I ask because many documents from historical Christians, especially the Catholic Church, explicitly condemn the practice.

Now, you'll see Americans quoting genesis to justify circumcision as a Christian religious practice.

Did this switch happen immediately after circumcision was introduced as a medical procedure in the late 1800's, or was it more subtle? Are there any particular people associated with the idea?

I question the validity of the premise that American Christians practice circumcision for religious reasons.

I understand that Americans in general have long been circumcising infant males, but the justification has always been that it is done for medical/hygienic purposes rather than religious ones.
