Did they show it live on TV like the western nations and Japan? Was it reported at all? Was it down played? Truthful?
It was reported in the major newspapers. Pravda did several pieces on the moon landings, though it wasn't really "headline" news. It wasn't necessarily downplayed, and the facts were given quite straight. However, no newspaper attempted to report it as if it were an enormous event. In many ways, it was reported in the same way that America reported Yuri Gagarin's orbit in space. It was reported, but not given too much focus.
To my knowledge, it was not shown on television, but at the time, televisions were relatively (compared to the US) uncommon in family homes. Dissemination of information was largely done through state-controlled newspapers, such as Pravda.
