What do you suppose happened during the Dark Ages (c. 1200 - 800 BC)

by TAEHSAEN

Little to no texts were found documenting anything that happened during this period (as far as I know). I only took an intro level history course so I don't know much, however I'm still very much interested to hear the various hypotheses about this age.

The date range in question is 1200BCE to 800BCE. In class we've focused mainly on the blackout of information in Ancient Greece during this period. Greeks were known for writing down day to day events, but apparently around this time, there were frightened texts from scholars and scribes about the importance of tightening security on their borders, right before the blackout of information occurred. There are many hypotheses about what happened during that time so I was hoping to ask you all what you guys and gals think!

Well, in that timeperiod there were massive demographic, political and cultural changes going which are too complex for me to explain in one little post(plus we still dont know a lot about it all)but ill give it a shot.

One major change was the widespread adoption of iron as the common mans metal. Bronze was still used for more prestigious purposes, such as making jewelry and elite armor. However, due to new smelting techniques, developed in iron-rich areas such as cyprus, iron was now not only possible to be more easily turned into a malleable usable metal, new techniques of carburization were developed. Carburization is the adding of carbon artificially to iron, and it made iron a much stronger metal.

I have to state this, iron was used in the Bronze Age, we have iron weapons and jewelry all over the Eurasian bronze age, here is a image of a bronze age iron weapon, delivered as a gift to the pharaohs from Mitanni, next to a gold dagger: http://imagecache.allposters.com/images/pic/BRGPOD/149453~The-King-s-Two-Daggers-from-the-Tomb-of-Tutankhamun-circa-1370-52-BC-New-Kingdom-Gold-Iron-Posters.jpg

But, bronze was a superior metal in many respects so it simply wasnt necessary to replace it with iron until iron actually became stronger as a metal. The shift of metal is a really major deal. Since iron is easier to work and more common, it allowed for the first time for even the poorest societies to fight on a relatively equal plane with bronze wielding societies.

Another major event in the "Dark Ages" were the Sea people invasions, and eventual settlement. We dont know specifically where they all came from(although many of them might have come from a collapsing Mycenaean Greece), but we do know that many of them settled in the Near East, destroyed the old empires and cultures and replaced them with entirely new societies. Some sea people settlements are still around today, such as Gaza, though its not having a good day right now.

I know it doesn't directly apply to the greeks, but hopefully it gives a good context to the general changes in the timeperiod.

To clarify, you're talking 1200BCE to 800BCE, correct? And where, exactly, do you want to know the history for?

Your time period is too wide and we still don't have enough evidence on this time period. So we have some theories of events like sea peoples, the Dorian invasion, natural disasters, Aliens (history channel) etc.

Some events during the Greek Dark ages are the folllowing:

Collapse of the Mycenaean palace system.

The economy became local. Instead of large cities we had small villages.

Movements and resettlements. (Possibly origin of the sea people?)

Replacement of the original alphabet (Linear B) to the Phoenician.

Florising of the Geometric art.

The arrival of the Iron Age.
