What are the earliest examples of people putting collars on pets? Was there ever a significantly different way of identifying personal pets?

Egyptian art from the 4th millennium BC depicts dogs wearing collars and some of those have been discovered by archaeologists. We know the types of names they gave their dogs because of inscriptions on surviving collars. Names like 'Brave One, Reliable, Good Herdsman and North-Wind'
