My parents have had this portrait of my father's great grandfather for a long time and we have never been able to identify the country of origin.
There is great debate in the family as to where we can trace our roots, and any info anyone can provide could put an end to at least part of the debate.
Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Looks like Austro Hungarian uniforms from the late 1800s. In this photo, check the guy in the upper right.
Plus, dude looks Eastern European.
I think your relative maybe outranked the guy in the photos I linked to, but a lot of the design concepts are the same and the picture of your guy was probably ~20 years before the one I linked to. If not Austro-Hungarian, I'd bet it's right in that neighborhood.
