Of the areas of the world that are today predominantly Muslim, which areas were brought into the Muslim sphere through conquest, and which through proselytization/intermarriage/trade routes/etc?
I think it's important to note that in history, and even in current affairs, rarely does anything happen by one significant factor alone. There are always many other events at play that lead to something.
