From what I understand, West Berlin was not even part of West Germany and was divided into areas of U.S., French, and British control. Furthermore, West Germany, with its capital in Bonn, was much more prosperous. What reasons/logic led to making Berlin the capital after reunification?
Berlin has historically always been a capital of Germany since the original German unification in 1871 and a prospering city at that. For one, keeping Bonn as the capital would be seen as leaving the east out of the picture. Two, Germans wanted to leave their legacy of separation behind and go back to being a united people again.
Wow thanks for the incredible replies! Much appreciated!
