Of course most will consider all Nazi units to be consisting of criminals but I have been given to understand that Góbels or perhaps Góring created a Nazi unit consisting of rapists, murderes and other foul human beings who actually did a fairly good job during the war but ehy were also relentless and vile. I can't find any mention of this unit anywhere so I am asking whether it existed and what the name of that unit was.
Thanks in advance.
You´re probably thinking of the SS-Sondereinheit Dirlewanger. It´s first members were actually just poachers, but they recruited every kind of criminals in the later stages of the war. They gained infamy during the Warsaw Uprising were they commited atrocities, including raping and killing nurses.
Also consider the Strafbattalions in the Wehrmarcht. Most of the time however it wasn't always just "rapists, murderes[sic] and other foul human beings" but convicted soldiers who had to redeem themselves in these probationary units before being allowed back to the respective non-criminal units.
There is a book "Strafbattalion 999" by Heinz Kosalik, however I have no idea if it is any good or accurate.
