Logistically, how were national elections carried out in the early Untied States?

by ArsenicAndJoy

I realize that the voting population was significantly smaller than it is today, but in a country much larger in size than any European nation, how were votes from different parts of the country tallied? Were there any measures to prevent the one who delivered the ballots from committing voter fraud?

This can be an interesting question, but I'm not exactly sure what you are referring to.

  1. When are you talking about? 1790s and the election of Washington or mid-1800s? There are some pretty significant differences between the two.

  2. What do you mean by logistically? Do you mean how did people actually vote, or something else regarding the tallying the total vote?

I am curious why you think it wouldn't be the same as how it's done now. People go to the local voting area to vote, then it's tallied and send to the county level, which put them together and sent it to the state level. It would just be slower 200 years ago with horses.
