What happened to the Latin language that the Romans spoke?

Did it evolve into the Romantic languages that we know today?

That's exactly what it did- centuries of use by different linguistic communities, as well as exposure to other languages, created the Romance languages. Even today, their vocabularies and grammars are very similar; I know Latin and Spanish and can read most Italian, despite knowing nothing about it.
