I was reading about him on TIL and couldn't really find much info. Some people on the comments were talking about how the perception of him as a freedom fighter is inaccurate. Anyone know much about him or can suggest a good book to read?
Charlie Wilson's War
Ghost Wars by Steve Cole.
"Taliban" by Ahmed Rashid.
"Jihad" by Ahmed Rashid, IIRC, isn't quite so germane, but it's a great read in conjunction with the aforementioned books.
These four books should give you a very solid understanding of the historical context of the GWOT, as well as what's going on now and in the future.
