Why is it A, B, C, D, E, etc.? Sorry if this is a stupid question.
The modern English alphabet is a marriage of the Latin alphabet (itself a variation of the Greek alphabet) and the Anglo-Saxon runic alphabet. The order of the letters were based on these predecessors. As to why the letters were originally in this order, we need to look a bit deeper into what a letter represents: a sound. The Latin becomes even more difficult by ordering sounds using multiple/separated marks. As each letter had its own individual sound, there really was only the need to decide on the order to help with learning and memorization. You will notice, in the Latin Alphabet as well as the English, that letters with similar sounds are placed near each other.
The order of the English today is simply the effect of time and interpretation from many culture to adapt the Greco-latin influences into their languages and to add letters to represent the unique sounds.
