There was a TIL this morning about the popularity of heavy metal music and culture in Norway, Sweden, and Finland (especially the latter). Is there a historical cause for this popularity?
I realize this may be very close to violating the "20 year rule", so for the sake of this conversation, let's just say I am interested in causes for the popularity that are older than 20 years.
I'd recommend asking this in /r/AskAnthropology, cultural questions are more in the realm of Anthropology than History, though of course they are closely intertwined.
Hello everyone. I've had to do a clear-out of responses in this thread, since comments are essentially arguing about whether Scandinavia has a more significant metal scene than other regions. First: these don't answer the question: OP asks for historic causes for the popularity of metal in Scandinavia. Second: responses discussing current popularity in various regions are contravening this sub's "20 year rule".
