Definition of "Paroled" during Civil War

by Nick_FTN

Forgive me if this isn't the appropriate sub for this but I am trying to research my family history and came across this document about a relative being "paroled" in July of 1865. I was hoping somebody could explain what this meant. thank you

I just discovered this happened in May of 1865 in New Orleans. So does this document mean my relative was likely a Confederate that surrendered in New Orleans and was released in July? for reference he was born and died in TN
