Can someone briefly explain to me how the Roman Catholic Church stayed in operation after the fall of western Rome?

If you briefly explain why you think it shouldn't have continued, I think we can generate a quick bullet-point list as why it did. You seem to have an expectation there is some sort of contradiction in the Church's survival.
