Was there a difference in the treatment of slaves in the England vs the United States?

by TheIncubusS

As an American visiting the UK I have noticed very major differences in the way the average American treats someone vs how a Brit does. So my question is basically was the life of slave different depending on which country they were taken to?

Of course there was. In terms of England and the United States there was a huge difference mainly because of the number of slaves in each place and the type of work they did. In the US, particularly in the southern US, there was a large number of slaves that worked on plantations. In England, the small number of slaves that were there worked mostly as domestic slaves and craftsmen. Plantation labor is much more taxing than domestic slave work and the large amount of slaves in the southern US led to more harsh punishments in order to keep the slave population under control. Therefore, slaves were treated better for the most part in England.
