Has there ever been a time since the dawn of Islam in the Middle East that the geo-political climate has shifted this often?

I am trying to analyze events in the Middle East that could compare to the numerous shifts in the Middle East in our current day. What event besides the spread of Islam hundreds of years ago could compare to what we are seeing today?

The way I see it, It's not shifting that often, or more often than usual for the region. We've been spoiled by about two decades of relative peace, so to a lot of young adults, this return to the norm seems shocking. It should be said though, that nothing that is happening now is really unexpected. Events during the last twenty years of "peace" have laid the groundwork, and everything that's happening now is just the bricks falling into place.
