Bossa Nova was a musical genre developed in Brazil in the 1950s. It did become popular in the US in the 50s and 60s. The American saxophonist Stan Getz and the singer Ella Fitzgerald performed Bossa Nova songs alongside Brazilian musicians João Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto, and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Frank Sinatra also added some of the songs to his repertoire.
Of course, the creators of Bossa Nova (AC Jobim and João Gilberto) were heavily influenced by Jazz, a US musical style, as well as their native Samba, so this may not fully qualify as being outside the US influence.
Tango, I think americans have a cartoonish view of this music. Also cumbia and boleros are huge all over latin america, but I dont think it had any impact on american music. Charles mingus has an album that has a little influence of cumbia, but I'm not aware of any more than this.
Black Metal? Just now it's getting the attention it deserves from the US.
Is there any examples outside of latin america?
