This is a pretty popular question! Here's the relevant section of the FAQ, with a bunch of older threads. Basically, we use the sequence the Romans used, who got it from the Etruscans and the Greeks, and the Greeks got it from the Phoenicians.

We've never had any good answers as to how the Phoenicians decided on the sequence, though.
