Why is the population of the US 13x the size of Australia?

First of all, the US is significantly larger in area, and more importantly, a much more sizeable proportion of the US is inhabitable than of Australia, which is mostly desert. Hence the US can sustain a much larger population than Australia can. Secondly, mass immigration into the US started much earlier, and came from many different countries, whereas immigration into Australia came overwhelmingly from the British Isles until very recently.
