Was the Cyrillic we see today once Greek characters? Or is Cyrillic a mixture of ancient Runic characters with Greek placeholders?

Around the year 990 the Russians did not have an alphabet or written language, the priests from Byzantium traveled to Kiev and gave them the alphabet they had invented for goths and slavs years ago. Is Byzantium credited with the foundation of the Russian language?
