Pepper was a valuable luxury item since at least the Roman Republic, when it was traded ounce per ounce on par with silver. Relatively nonperishable, pepper functioned as a currency in its own right. (when the Visigoths captured Rome in 408 AD, they demanded payment in gold, silver, and pepper).
