This isn't some attempt to justify Russia's current actions towards Ukraine, I'm just curious. I know there were Tartars and Cossacks living there, I know it was a separate subunit of the USSR and I imagine events like the Holodomor created some feeling of national solidarity, but as far as I know there's never been a Ukrainian nation before the one we have today. So where did the idea of Ukraine come from, given that the idea of Russia has its origins there (in the Kievan Rus)?
