The most obvious version of this, would in relation to the Scopes monkey trial in 1925. The US maintained a healthy respect for the sciences and had been absorbing Darwin's relatively new theory normally, but a backlash from fundamentalists occurred and has grown into a kind of anti-science movement in the United States.
