It has to have involved luck to find such a remote island, but be aware that it is possible to find evidence of land without having to sail close enough to see the land directly. There's some information on this from a NOVA program via PBS, info here. Cloud formations, swell patterns in the waves, and the presence of long-distance seabirds, some of which can fly many miles but who must roost somewhere on land, are all clues that sailors could use to spot land well over the horizon. That opens up the range around the island that explorers would have needed to sail into in order to know that land was available.

There is very little evidence, but some are willing to argue this, to suggest that there was continued trade once the island was settled, so if this is a correct read of the evidence (and it may not be) then it may have been impossible or prohibitively difficult for the settlers to retrace their steps or another group to locate their settlement.
