Wasn't the split started over the Soviet Union's de-Stalinization? Why not seek rapprochement with everyone when carrying out economic reforms?
First of all, attempts at rapprochement did occur in the mid 80s from both sides, first from Brezhnev and then Gorbachev on the Soviet side.
But the primary reason why conflicts continued past 1976 was geopolitics rather than ideological, first over competing client states of Vietnam and Cambodia in Southeast Asia, then from the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, which China viewed as a strategic threat on its western borders.
