What was the little chain/tube on the end of the barrel of the Browning M1917 for?

I was watching the Pacific miniseries the other day and noticed that on the end of the barrel of the machine guns there is a little chain (and sometimes a tube) as shown in this photo.

I figured out what kind of gun, and that they were water cooled. Is it a plug for the water tank? Or something similar? Either way I haven't seen them on any other guns and was curious.

That was a chain to hold on to the cap for the water tank that surrounded the barrel.

Yup, water jacket plug. The M1919 was air cooled and obsoleted the M1917
