Do you mean a particular type of pipe or a particular time period?

Tobacco was fairly widely used in the British navy during the period of time I study (roughly the Napoleonic Wars). It is of course a New World crop, but its popularity grew quickly in England, to the point where mariners would fairly regularly smoke tobacco (it's worth pointing out that simple clay pipes are fairly common to find on contemporary shipwrecks, and they were among the artifacts recovered from the Swedish Vasa).
