The wiki page on Bellfounding, the casting of bells for churches and other buildings. Mentions a practice in Britain of rich locals throwing gold and silver in to the cast in the belief this would improve the sound of the bell. The article doesn't give dates for this tradition but the practice of having the bell cast near the church is dated from the 7th to the 18th c.
