I was reading Steven Pressfield novel "Gates of Fire", which is amazing, and I wonder how much in terms of battle history is true there? What about customs, did the Spartans really have a body discipline to deal with fear?

The funny thing is I couldn't find much about it on the internet. Since this novel is so famous I'm sure someone else has wondered the same thing before... (sorry for the broken english, argh)
