Most artifactporn pictures I've seen with shoes, they appear to be made from leather but in the degraded quality I can't tell if they had any sort of markings on the bottom to give them a better grip on the ground.
I've worn leather sandles that were flat on the bottom and slide around everywhere (especially on grass) which leaves me wondering how they didn't slide around!
Roman soldiers wore tough leather sandals called "Caligae", which had Iron studs in the bottom, similar to modern football / Soccer shoes.
They were hard wearing, having more in common with marching boots than the kind of item you might wear to the beach.
