I am looking to write a historical fiction account of Sargon of Akkad, mainly because he is one of the very first recorded kings, but also because I have found no other great account of his life. His life seems to be perfect for an adventure story, but there are only scholarly writings on him to my knowledge - and very few at that.
I'm looking for historical accounts of his life. I'd be interested in fictional accounts as well if you know of any. My approach would be something like Homer to The Odyssey: Not exactly true, but close to what we might imagine, with blanks filled in with a bit of imagination.

Westerholz' Legends of the Kings of Akkade: The Texts is an indispensable collection of primary sources. And there is quite a bit of legendary/fictional material here.
Heinz's "Sargon of Akkad: Rebel and Usurper in Kish" in Representations of Political Power Case Histories from Times of Change and Dissolving Order in the Ancient Near East will be useful; and most of whatever tiny historical tidbits can be gleaned about Sargon's life/reign are summarized in the short section on Sargon by Aage Westenholz in the volume Mesopotamien: Akkade-Zeit und Ur III-Zeit (it's in English).
Almost all other info is going to be found in more general studies of early Akkad (e.g. Liverani (ed.), Akkad, the First World Empire: Structure, Ideology, Traditions). (Also, a lot of research on this topic is in German.)
As a tangential question: can someone give a summary on who we think Sargon was?
